A crisis in local news is leaving too many Americans without access to reliable reporting and community news on issues that affect everyday life.
This is not just a problem for the news industry, this is a threat to public information, community participation and civic life in the U.S.
A stand-alone nonprofit founded in 2024, AP Fund for Journalism is a landmark national response that brings the resources and expertise of The Associated Press and other talented journalists and philanthropists to bear on this critical challenge.
APFJ can be transformative, impacting both local news organizations and civic life in the U.S.
How we support
local news
With a 50-state footprint, AP is the backbone of the state and local news ecosystem and APFJ’s programs will provide newsrooms access to trusted content and services.
Why local news matters
By informing and engaging Americans on issues of everyday importance, local news is a foundational pillar of civic life. Without it the spread of misinformation accelerates, participation in local government is limited and understanding of issues including health, democracy, education and climate is reduced.
