What does APFJ do?
AP Fund for Journalism is a nonprofit that ensures state and local news outlets across the U.S. have the content and support they need to deliver nonpartisan reporting that engages communities and advances civic life.
How can I support APFJ?
There are multiple ways to support APFJ with a tax deductible contribution.
Donate online
Mail a check – donations can be made out to The Associated Press Foundation for Journalism and mailed to 200 Liberty St, 20th Floor, New York, NY 10281
Matching gifts – many employers will make matching gifts to charities chosen by their employees. Check with your employer about your company’s matching gift program and contact us at [email protected] if we can assist.
Donor advised funds (DAFs) – depending on your DAF, you can make a contribution online or make a recommendation to your fund. Please reference our address above and EIN 99-2494293. If we are not in your fund’s database, have them contact us at [email protected].
IRA donations – APFJ is eligible to receive qualified charitable distributions (QCDs). Checks can be sent to our mailing address. Contact us at [email protected] if you need assistance.
Stock donations – you or your broker should contact us at [email protected] for information on donating appreciated stock.
Legacy gifts – contact us at [email protected] for information on planned gifts or remembering APFJ in your estate plan.
How is APFJ related to The Associated Press?
For the past 179 years, The Associated Press has provided fact-based, independent, nonpartisan journalism, setting and maintaining industry standards for ethics in journalism worldwide. To ensure that state and local news outlets across the U.S. can deliver nonpartisan reporting that engages communities and advances civic life, the AP formed AP Fund for Journalism in 2024. A not-for-profit, APFJ provides content, resources and consultation to sustain and grow local news outlets nationwide.
APFJ is overseen by a Board of Directors, the majority of whom are independent of AP and its affiliates. AP can apply for grants from APFJ to support editorial projects that align with APFJ’s mission to ensure widespread access to reliable, nonpartisan and fact-based news and information in underserved issue areas.
APFJ contracts with AP via a services agreement for administrative, technology, payroll processing, benefits administration, office space and other support services as needed for operations.
What is APFJ’s legal status?
APFJ is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) status as determined by the IRS. Like other 501(c)(3) organizations, APFJ must comply with rules and regulations for public charities as determined by the IRS. We are a Delaware corporation and hold a New York State business license.
Is APFJ involved in editorial decisions?
Partners and grantees retain full editorial independence. APFJ is not involved in editorial or publishing decisions.
Does APFJ make grants to journalists?
APFJ cannot make grants to individual journalists or freelancers.
What is APFJ’s Employer Identification Number (EIN)?
Our EIN, often referred to as taxpayer ID number, is 99-2494293. Our legal name is The Associated Press Foundation for Journalism, Inc. and we hold a certificate to do business under the trade name AP Fund for Journalism.
